A University of Vermont student who went missing on a group hike up Vermont's highest peak was found unharmed Saturday.

A hiker was found safe and in good condition after friends reported him missing on Mt. Mansfield Saturday as temperatures dropped and darkness neared.

Fellow UVM students reported to Vermont State Police at 4:05 p.m. that they had become separated from 20-year-old Kailas Rangachar of Burlington and believed he might be lost as darkness neared and snowfall loomed on the top of Mt. Mansfield.

The students were not properly dressed for the weather, according to state police, who mobilized their search and rescue team, as well as Underhill/Jericho Fire, Essex Rescue, Stowe Mountain Rescue and Colchester Technical Rescue.

Rangachar was found at 5:10 p.m. in good condition hiking on the CCC Trail by a hiker who had learned of the missing student and set out to look for him. It was snowing on the mountain when Rangachar was located.

The other students had safely descended on the Sunset Ridge Trail to Underhill State Park when they called police.
