ESSEX – A car forced a Vermont Agency of Transportation plow truck to go off the road early Sunday morning, causing the plow truck to strike a utility pole, Essex Police said.

Police say they want to identify the car and driver who left the scene of the incident.

The plow truck driver later told police that he had been applying salt to the road when he saw a vehicle coming at him in his own lane, police said.

According to police, the plow truck driver, whose name was withheld from the news release, said he swerved into the other lane to avoid colliding with the car. As a result, the plow truck left the roadway and struck the utility pole.

Police responded shortly after 5 a.m. to the scene where the plow eventually crashed in the area of 250 Colchester Road. Damage was caused to both the plow and the pole.

The other vehicle continued to drive without stopping. The plow driver was unable to get a description of the other vehicle involved, police said.

Essex Police urge those with information about the incident to contact their police department at 878-8331.

"The Essex Police encourage drivers to slow down and be alert while operating in the presence of a plow truck," police stated in a news release. "The drivers of these trucks have limited visibility and maneuverability."
