Presidential candidate — and Burlington resident — Sen. Bernie Sanders plans to vote in his hometown on Town Meeting Day next week. Then he'll watch national voting results and deliver remarks on his Super Tuesday contests against Hillary Clinton.

Details had yet to be announced Wednesday about the longtime Vermont politician's plans for next week. But campaign spokesman Michael Briggs confirmed late Tuesday that Sanders will be in Burlington on March 1.

Presidential primary voting takes place that day in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia in addition to Vermont.

Next Tuesday's appearance will be Sanders' first major political campaign event in Vermont since his kickoff rally May 26 on the Burlington waterfront. An estimated 5,000 to 6,000 people attended the senator's rally on that hot, sunny day. Since then, Sanders has drawn far larger crowds that have packed arenas and ballrooms as he campaigned across the country.

Sanders: 'We begin a political revolution'

Once voting began, Sanders narrowly lost close caucuses in Iowa and Nevada to former Secretary of State Clinton. He tallied a big win over his rival, however, in New Hampshire's primary.

Polls show Sanders with a large lead over Clinton in Vermont ahead of next Tuesday's voting. He faces tougher fights in other Super Tuesday primaries.

Sanders held the mayor's office in Burlington from 1981-89. He then was elected to the U.S. House, and he has served as an independent senator for Vermont since 2007.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., announces he is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president at Waterfront Park in Burlington on May 26.
