Vermont gears up for spring Green Up

Vermont's annual spring cleaning of highways and byways is a month away, but its organizers have quickened the countdown with prizes and an appeal for tax-time donations.

Rain or shine, hundreds of volunteers are expected to ply roadsides with garbage bags.

As usual, Green Up Vermont takes place on the first Saturday of May — this year it falls on May 7 — and is timed to coincide with the disappearance of snow that typically hides unsightly litter.

This is the cleanup effort's 46th year, according to a news release from the nonprofit organization's president, Melinda Vieux.

"There is still time to donate on Line 29 of the Vermont State Income Tax Return, an easy way to support Green Up Day continuing for future generations," Vieux wrote.

The winner of this year's Green Up Vermont poster contest (and its $250 prize) is Charlotte Brace, a junior at Montpelier High School.

Sirena Sawyer, a sixth-grader at Fletcher Elementary School, wrote in her prize-winning essay that "Green Up Vermont means a healthier, happy, more beautiful environment for all the animals and for us to share with our family and friends.”

The full essay, as well as updated lists of volunteer opportunities, donation methods and pick-up and drop-off sites for garbage bags, can be found at www.greenupvermont.org.
