City Market seeks artists for South End store

Free Press Staff
City Market in Burlington, seen on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, is seeking artists to paint murals on its new South End location — which is scheduled to open in summer 2017.
The mural here at the downtown co-op's entrance was painted by Tara Goreau.

A search has begun for artists to create three murals for a new branch of City Market/Onion River Co-Op, scheduled to open next summer in Burlington's South End.

Submissions of qualifications and examples of previous work are due by Sept. 12, according to a statement released Tuesday by the co-op.

Site preparation is underway at the new store's location at Flynn Avenue and Briggs Street, where rail-side salt storage sheds once stood.

Citing the success of Tara Goreau’s fanciful mural at the entrance to City Market’s downtown store, the call for artists welcomes entries that “continue the theme of making the co-op more welcoming to all members and customers, as well as a way to celebrate the artistry of the South End of Burlington.”

By the end of September, a co-op panel will select a group of artists to further develop proposals; each will be awarded $250 to help with expenses, the release states.

Winning proposals, determined in early 2017, will have a larger budget for fees and materials: up to $7,500 for each of two smaller panels facing Briggs Street; and $15,000 for a large panel on the building’s north, Flynn Avenue entrance.

Unveiling of the artwork will coincide with a ceremonial opening of the new store, according to the co-op's release.

An outline of aesthetic and thematic considerations is included in the co-op’s Request for Qualifications, available online.
