Higher Ground security staffer accused of assaulting patron

Clarification: The incident involving a Higher Ground security staffer and a man at the concert venue occurred during the early morning of July 30. The story has been updated to reflect new information released by the South Burlington Police Department.

SOUTH BURLINGTON - A security staffer at Higher Ground in South Burlington is facing an accusation of simple assault after getting to an altercation with a man at the concert venue, city police said Tuesday.

Michael Cullen, a 25-year-old Pennsylvanian, was being escorted out of the venue by Steven Lyons, 41, early July 30 when an altercation took place, according to a statement from the police.

Cullen "sustained serious injuries as a result of the altercation" and was brought to the University of Vermont Medical Center. Police arrived after receiving a report of an unconscious male at about 1:25 a.m. 

Cullen has since been discharged from the hospital. Lyons was issued a citation to appear in court Sept. 14. 

A call and an email to Alex Crothers, co-owner of the venue, was not returned on Tuesday night.
