H.S. playoffs: Walker, MVU stun Rice

SWANTON - Richard Walker totaled 27 points, nine rebounds and five assists and No. 4 Missisquoi pulled off the unlikely win over perennial title contender and fifth-seeded Rice 60-56 in a Division I high school boys basketball quarterfinal Friday night.

Walker also finished 12 of 15 from the foul line as MVU (18-4) used a 22-13 third-quarter advantage to stage a rally before sealing the win at the line in the fourth quarter.

With the triumph, MVU reaches its first D-I semifinal in program history.

“It’s one of the biggest upsets in Division I history, as far as I’m concerned,” MVU coach Jim Bose said. “The boys came out and played a great game. Walker is a true Division I center and (Rice) had no answer for him.”

Riley Wilkin added nine points and Nick Cutting had eight for the Thunderbirds.

Kam Farris led Rice with 22 points before fouling out in the final minutes of the final frame. Alex Bond tossed in 12 points and Leo Chaikin struck for 11.

Rice, which had made the D-I final for six straight years, concludes at 14-8.

(3) Burlington 61, (6) Brattleboro 52: Kevin Garrison scored 17 of his 25 second-half points in the fourth quarter to help ignite host Burlington to the victory over Brattleboro.

Garrison finished with 30 points, production that included a half-court steal and dunk on the fast break. Haji Haji had 11 points and Almir Konjohovac put up 10 for Burlington, which trailed 36-34 going into the fourth quarter.

Eli Lombardi dropped 25 points and Ian Fulton-Black added 19 for the Colonels.

(2) Rutland 50, (7) Mount Mansfield 38: Kyle Cassarino scored 13 points and host Rutland ran off to a 25-5 halftime lead in defeating Mount Mansfield.

Noah Tyson’s 11 points and Nate Kingsley’s 10 contributed to the win for Rutland (20-2).

Trent LaBonty and Deng Adiang had eight points apiece for the Cougars (13-9), who couldn’t cut the deficit below 10 points in the second half.

D-II BOYS BASKETBALL

(6) Fair Haven 58, (3) Lyndon 49: Cam Coloutti struck for 24 points and Dylan Ellis added 17 as Fair Haven won at Lyndon.

Jacky Lau (17 points) and Logan Larose (16) paced defending-champion Lyndon.

Fair Haven opened to leads of 16-6 after the first quarter and 30-19 at the halftime break before holding off Lyndon’s second-half surge.

(2) Enosburg 74, (7) Harwood 37: Calvin Carter pumped in 30 points and host Enosburg booked its third straight trip to Barre Auditorium.

Caleb Laroche added 17 points for 22-0 Enosburg.

Evan Pearl notched 13 points for Harwood (12-9).

D-IV BOYS BASKETBALL

(4) Danville 80, (12) Richford 64: Four players reached double figures, paced by Travis Grosse’s 21, as host Danville put away Richford.

Ian Steele and Riley Fenoff each tossed in 18 points while Connor Johnson added a dozen for Danville (15-7).

Devon Coons rolled up 29 points and Brandon Fuller had 17 for Richford (7-15).

D-I GIRLS HOCKEY

(4) BFA-St Albans 3, (5) Mount Mansfield-Champlain Valley 1: Emma Hill and Peyton Dukas scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart late in regulation as host BFA-St. Albans edged Mount Mansfield-Champlain Valley.

MMU-CVU’s Kiley McClure tied it up 58 seconds into regulation before Hill and Dukas responded for BFA, the latter coming at 13:46.

Linsey Larrow scored in the first period and Meghan Connor finished with assists on all three goals for the Comets. Maddy Hungerford made 22 saves.

Joanna Wright posted 27 saves for the CougarHawks.

(3) Rutland 6, (6) Spaulding 3: Maggie Schillenger and Meghan Hamilton had the third-period goals as Rutland doubled up Spaulding.

Hamiton, who also fired in two first-period goals, finished with a hat trick and a pair of assists while Emma Mazzariello and Caitlin Laird also tallied.

Jessica Scott (two goals) and Alison Ahearn (goal) had the goals for Spaulding, with Amber McGinley racking up 56 saves.

Carolyn Laird stopped 16 shots for Rutland (15-4-2).

(2) Middlebury 5, (7) Burlington-Colchester 0: Andi Boe totaled two goals and an assist and host Middlebury dispatched Burlington-Colchester.

Tulley Hescock had a goal and an assist, Satchel McLaughlin tallied the opening goal and Abby Gleason also tallied for the Tigers.

Katie Billings made 11 saves for Middlebury. Jenna Blondin turned back 32 shots for BC.

D-II GIRLS HOCKEY

(1) Rice 4, (8) Hartford 1: Kate Buckley fired in two goals and host Rice skated past Hartford.

Grace Miller and Dana Sartorelli accounted for Rice’s other goals while Becca Tudor came up eight eight saves.

Madison Duranleau had Hartford’s lone goal, and Maggie Gilman stopped 39 shots.

D-I BOYS HOCKEY

(2) BFA-St. Albans 6, (7) U-32 0: Zach Savage scored twice and host BFA-St. Albans built a 4-0 lead after the opening period to seize the win over U-32.

Colby Brouillette, Connor Wood, Owen Hungerford and Noah Vincellette also scored, with Owen Deslauriers and Ethan Bonnette netting two assists apiece. Dan Ellis posted 14 stops.

For U-32, Roy Haynes made 25 saves.
